Picture 3: A nighttime photo by Chilltown Blues of a statue (by sculptor Alvin Pettit) of civil rights activist and educator Mary McCleod Bethune on redlined south side of Jersey City. Just behind the nine-foot bronze tall statue is a small park named for her. Since the photo is taken through glass, tricks of the light make it appear as if there's little floating orbs of light all around everything. The whole thing looks bluesy, partially because sky has deep blue tint.. Picture 4: What looks like the bust of a gray pigeon looks out of a window at an urban landscape: there's the rear of a black car almost parked by the crosswalk but not quite. And across the street hung just below streetlight fixtures are, respectively, one large glowing white snowflake ornament; and about 40 feet behind it, another one across the street. They come from a fixture that has two hooks on each side of it as well. Nestled in the center hook is a pigeon figurine. The color of the wall behind it is orange and the light from the three bulbs has a bird-like silhouette. In the bottom left corner in black is "chilltownblues.com." To the left of it, from the viewer's perspective, is a kind of watermelon pie, where the eyes are half-kiwis, an orange wedge for a noise and a dark string of berries for a smile. The blues as a musical genre is about taking what's hard/oppressive and wielding that into something that takes away some of the power of those things, if only just. As a new calendar year begins, the proverbial blues will certainly be with us. But here’s to making a crossroads out of them.
