Among the artists for the group show “Say Less” at Curate NJ Gallery in Raritan, N.J. is Hector Martinez, raised in and a current resident of Chilltown (aka Jersey City) from which he produces traditional fine art paintings that evoke, quite simply, a lot. His painting, “Nancy,” features his titular subject turning from a pale, grayish light in a darker direction from which a green light emerges and has her absorbed. She holds a boquet of roses that seem like an extension of her, as she’s wearing a blouse with roses and green leaves.
Showing a lot in a singular piece is the goal of the show, according to Curate NJ Gallery owner and main curator Tess Hansen. “‘Say Less’ is a compilation of work about symbolic representation of a subject with lots of emotional subtext,” Hansen writes in a press release. “… Some works are startlingly clear but set a scene of longing, pastoral, or romanticism. This kind of artwork lends itself well to watercolor and pastels but the show also includes photography and oil paintings.”
“Not that family was in the way, and they never will be. They’ve been very supportive in my art life.” - Hector Martinez
