Picture from Change.org petition of a red pickleball court with about six set-up nets all being utilized. This is in the center of a cluster of apartment buildings, with the courts being what appears to be 25 to 30 feet away from some of the buildings. In the background small trees looms along the sidewalk and people are on benches on the sidewalk just beyond the courts.

Residents at complex 95 River Dr South in the Newport section of Jersey City have started a petition to remove a pickleball court located in front of it.

The Change.org petition — https://www.change.org/p/remove-the-pickleball-court-from-newport-jersey-city-restore-peace-for-residents — states that the noise from the pickleball court violates the city’s noise ordinance. The petitioners seek the permanent removal of the court, asking for it to be replaced with a quieter, community-friendly alternative due to concerns about noise that include “non-stop, high-pitched paddle and ball impacts reverberating through multiple buildings,” “amplified noise” because of the court’s closeness to residences, and “sleep disruption, difficulty focusing for remote workers, and mental fatigue for families and elderly residents,” the petition states.

Jersey City’s municipal code allows for noise up to 65 decibels (dBs) in residential areas during the day. When it’s 10 p.m., that drops by 15 dBs.

How would pickleball work within the daytime range?
